Simple homemade dog treats made with just beef and coconut oil in the Deluxe Air Fryer & Oven.
If you’ve ever looked at the price of high-quality dog treats lately, you know they can get expensive fast. That’s exactly why I started making homemade beef jerky treats for Teddy — and honestly, he goes absolutely crazy for them.
These treats are:
* simple
* budget-friendly
* high-value for training
* and made with just 2 ingredients
I like making large batches when roasts go on sale, freezing portions, and then dehydrating them whenever we’re running low.
It’s surprisingly easy!
What You’ll Need
* Beef roast or inexpensive cuts of beef (I usually wait for those “orange tags” when roasts go on sale!)
* Coconut oil
That’s it.
No seasonings, no sugar, no complicated ingredients.
Why Homemade Dog Treats?
One thing I love about making treats at home is:
* you control exactly what goes into them
Many packaged jerkies contain:
* sugar
* heavy seasonings
* preservatives
* unnecessary ingredients
But these are simply:
* beef
* and a little coconut oil
Perfect for dogs.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Slice the beef thinly.
Start with whatever beef roast or cut is on sale.
One important thing to remember:
Dogs don’t care if it’s an expensive cut of meat or is tough to chew!
Slice the beef into:
* thin strips
The thinner the strips:
* the faster and more evenly they dehydrate
2. Toss with coconut oil.
Add a small amount of:
* melted coconut oil
and toss lightly to coat the meat.
You’ll notice little white spots on the meat once chilled — that’s simply the coconut oil solidifying.
No seasoning is added because many seasonings are not safe for dogs.
Batch Prep Makes This Easy
I love preparing several batches at once.
When roasts are on sale:
* I slice multiple batches
* toss them with coconut oil
* divide them into freezer bags
* and freeze them
Then whenever Teddy needs more treats, I simply thaw a bag in the refrigerator and dehydrate it.
Such an easy system.
3. Arrange on the racks.
Spread the beef strips across the air fryer racks in:
* a single layer
The Deluxe Air Fryer & Oven racks are large enough that you can make:
* two full racks at a time
which makes batch prep especially convenient.
4. Set the dehydrate function.
Turn the dial to:
* Dehydrate
The default setting is:
* 130°F
But for this recipe, adjust the temperature to:
* 170°F
Then set the time for:
* 3-4 hours
and start the cycle.
No Preheat Needed
One nice feature:
The dehydrate setting does not require preheating.
Just load the trays and start.
At the halfway point:
* rotate the racks
to help everything dry evenly.
5. Cool and store.
Once the jerky is finished:
* let it cool completely
Then store in:
* the refrigerator
or
* freezer
depending on how quickly your dog will eat it.
Because this recipe does not contain preservatives, refrigeration helps maintain freshness.
Teddy’s Review 🐶
Teddy waited *very patiently* for his taste test at the end… and I’d say the final review was definitely successful.
Honestly, there’s something really satisfying about making simple homemade treats your pets genuinely love.
