If you’ve never made popcorn in bacon fat, you’re in for a treat!
This is one of those simple recipes that makes people say, “Why didn’t I think of that?” It takes just a few minutes to make, uses ingredients you probably already have on hand, and creates the most amazing smoky, savory flavor.
The next time you cook bacon, don’t throw away that bacon grease. Save it and turn it into a batch of homemade popcorn that’s perfect for movie night, game day, or whenever you’re craving a salty snack.
Why Make Popcorn at Home?
Homemade popcorn is one of my favorite budget-friendly snacks. A small amount of popcorn kernels makes a huge bowl, and you get to control exactly what goes into it.
No mystery ingredients. No artificial flavors. Just real food and incredible flavor.
And when you swap regular oil for bacon fat? That’s where the magic happens.
What You’ll Need
- 1 tablespoons bacon fat
- ⅓ cup popcorn kernels
- Coarse sea salt or Himalayan salt, to taste
Equipment
How to Make Bacon Popcorn
Start by adding the bacon fat to your 3-quart stainless steel pot. Place the pot over medium-low heat and allow the bacon fat to melt completely.
Once melted, add the popcorn kernels and give them a quick stir so they’re coated with the bacon fat.
Place the lid on the pot, leaving it slightly tilted so a little steam can escape. This helps keep the popcorn crisp while it’s cooking.
As the kernels begin to heat, occasionally lift the pan off the burner and give it a gentle shake. This helps the kernels cook evenly and prevents scorching. It also helps protect the bottom of your pan from scratches.
After a couple of minutes, the popping begins—and so does the incredible aroma.
Continue cooking until there’s about a four- to five-second pause between pops. That’s your signal that the popcorn is done.
Immediately pour the popcorn into a Stainless Steel Bowl and season with few grinds of Coarse Sea & Himalayan Salt
Then dig in!
A Few Tips for Success
Keep the Heat Low
Bacon fat has a lower smoke point than many cooking oils. If you notice any smoking, your heat is too high.
Medium-low heat is all you need.
Don’t Rush It
The popcorn may take a few minutes to get started, but once it begins popping, it moves quickly. Stay nearby and listen for that pause between pops.
Season While It’s Hot
The salt sticks best when the popcorn is fresh out of the pot.
Why I Love This Recipe
I love recipes that make use of ingredients we already have in our kitchens. Instead of tossing out bacon grease, this recipe transforms it into something delicious.
It’s affordable, simple, and honestly one of those snacks that disappears much faster than you’d expect.
If you’re looking for a fun way to elevate homemade popcorn, give this Bacon Popcorn a try. The smoky bacon flavor paired with the crunch of freshly popped popcorn is hard to beat.
And if you make it, I’d love to hear what you think!
